The new framework directive 2007/46/EC was introduced on 29 October 2007. For the first time EC type approval was applied to commercial vehicles. The directive provides a European-wide mechanism for ensuring that these vehicles meet relevant environmental and safety standards. To obtain this homologation vehicles of categories N₂, N₃, O₃ and O₄ must be fitted with an antispray device according to Directive 91/226/EEC.

Type Approval Regulations come into force as indicated in the table below.
